Creating Effective YouTube Videos

In this day and age, nearly everyone knows YouTube and the power it has to make anyone an overnight viral superstar.

While this guide may not get you onto your favorite talk show, here are a few tips and tricks to creating your own YouTube videos that will hopefully capture your audience’s attention and leave them wanting more.

Pay Attention To Your Video Location

If the video is meant to be informative, you don’t want any background distractions that will cause the viewer to lose focus on what it is you’re trying to explain.

Keep the backdrop and video shooting location simple, the viewer needs to be engaged with what you are saying, not whats going on around you.

On the other hand, if the video is meant to show the user something (the tour of a home, for example), there are a few things to watch out for. Again, even though you may be moving while filming, make sure there aren’t any distracting objects or events taking place during your tour.

Plan the video and video route before filming, and don’t be afraid to shoot multiple takes!

Also note, just because the video is meant to be a tour or journey, doesn’t mean still or slow moving panoramic shots won’t be useful.

The Content Makes All The Difference In Viral Videos!

While your video is most likely made to convey a message or tell a story, don’t be overly informative. Short and sweet is always better.

Be sure to hit all the points you need to, but don’t be afraid to keep your explanations simple but then let the viewer know where they can find additional info. This is a great way to refer viewers to your personal website, blog, or social media page.

Try to refrain from using on-screen text. While this may seem like a good idea, you don’t want to distract the user from what is going on in the video or what you may be trying to say.

It is always better to say things out loud whether you are speaking directly to the camera, or adding a voice over.

Video Settings On YouTube

Once you have a video you would like to upload to YouTube, there are many useful settings associated with the video that will help you to get more views and promote your video in the best way possible.

Choosing the correct name for your video is very important, make sure to pick something simple, while still letting the viewer know what they will be watching. Don’t be overly informative with the title. Additional information is perfect for the video description.

Make sure you fill out as much information about your video as possible, under “Basic Info” you will find room for a more detailed description of your video (a good place to add contact info or links to your website/social media).

You will also see the option to add “Tags.” This is how you can categorize your video to show up when viewers search YouTube. It’s OK and actually recommended to add multiple tags.

Just make sure to include location specific tags as well as any topics that have to do with your video or the audience you are trying to reach.

Once your video is uploaded and good to go, promote it!

Post links to all of your social media sites and include it on your website or blog as well. Word of mouth is still a perfectly acceptable way to let people know about something, tell them (or show them) where they can find your video!

And Most Importantly…

Be consistent! A single video on YouTube will not increase your views. Adding new videos at least once a week is a good place to start, it will show viewers you are active and will keep them coming back for more.
