X-Ray Vision: Can You Spot The Opportunity?

Illusion

What do you see in this picture?

Look again — do you see anything else?

Can you look at what others might see as failure and spot the opportunity?

“When one door closes another door opens,

but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us.”

— Alexander Graham Bell

We’ve all heard the “door opens” part of Alexander Graham Bell’s famous quote, but have you heard the part about NOT seeing the new doors that open?

When things go wrong or something doesn’t work out like you thought it would or comes to an end, you have several choices about what to do next:

1. You could do nothing and live with the consequences.

2. You could try to get things back to the way they were.

3. You could look for alternatives that are better than the former status quo.

The third choice is that of an innovator. While inventors come up with new stuff, innovators come up with changes to the stuff that makes the stuff better.

When doors close, we have a fresh opportunity to look for alternatives that are better than the way things were before.

When we experience failure, as we all do from time to time, we can look back on the closed door and reflect upon what worked, and what didn’t work, and then we can step through the new door with an innovative plan for a better future.

Inspired by the disaster of Hurricane Katrina, noted architect Barry Berkus (November 25, 1935 – November 30, 2012) came up with a brilliantly simple solution to keep post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans safe from future flooding.

Check out his very smart solution in this 3-minute video:

Opportunity is all around us, not just when doors close or things go wrong, but all the time.

Innovators look for better ways of doing things, and then they take action to improve upon the status quo.
