How to Use Google Calendar

Do you find yourself constantly writing notes or leaving reminders for yourself so you don’t forget important upcoming events? If you aren’t currently using a Calendar application either on your Smartphone, Tablet or Computer, you should be. Google Calendar is one of my favorite calendar applications, as it makes it simple to track all upcoming events and important dates by syncing with your devices as well as giving you different notification options.

Setting up Google Calendar

The only requirement necessary to take advantage of Google Calendar’s features is that you must have a Google Account. Signing up with Google essentially means creating yourself a Gmail account. This is how Google ties all of their many features and applications together to deliver you a personal user experience.

To get to your Google Calendar, just go to

If you already have a Google account, you will be prompted to log in before being taken to your Calendar.

The Google Calendar Interface

Once logged into your Google Account, your Calendar interface will look similar to this one: (See Screenshot).

From here there are just a few things to be aware of:

  • Quick Navigation between current & additional calendars (Screenshot)
  • Easily switch between daily, weekly, monthly, and 7-day views (Screenshot)
  • Search your entire Calendar using the Search bar (Screenshot)

Adding an Event

To add a new event to your calendar you have two options, simply click the date you would like the event to start (Screenshot) or click the “Create” button along the left side of the screen (Screenshot). Next you will be taken to the edit even screen where you can customize the specific date and time of the event, the color that appears on your calendar, quantity and timing of event reminders, as well as many additional options.

Calendar Settings

There are many useful settings to take advantage of in order to customize the look and feel of your Google Calendar interface as well as options to sync your calendars between devices. To access your Calendar settings, click on the “Gear” icon in your top right corner and selecting “Settings” (See Screenshot). On the Mobile setup page, you can link sync your phone in order to receive text message notifications as well as to use your calendar across multiple devices (including your phone).

Syncing Your Calendar with Other Applications

You can sync your Google Calendar with outlook. Just check out this article on how you can do so. The article will walk you through it as well as introduce some free tools for you to be able to sync Calendar with different applications and devices.

Hopefully this guide has helped you learn the basics behind Google Calendar so that you can become more organized and use your time more efficiently!
